THE ORIGINALS COLLECTION

This is a sampling of where it all started and my Dad, George Barfield’s, influence on my art form - including my Dad’s 1st stained glass window, made in December 1979.

HARRIETTS TULIPS: This is where it all started! My Parents, George and Sara, were often taking various arts and crafts classes. In 1979, when my Dad took a stained glass making class in Indianapolis, this is the first window he ever made. He gifted this window as a Christmas present to Sara’s Mother, Harriett.

This window landed in my hands in 2013 when I found it in a dark corner of George and Sara’s basement. It’s priceless and reminds me of when I was first inspired to make stained glass windows.

GEORGE’S FIRST COMMISSION: As the story goes, This family heirloom is the first stained glass window my Dad was commissioned to make in the mid 70’s. He charged a whopping $50 and was paid in advance to design and build the window. Turns out, his client was so demanding, asking for daily updates, that George decided to refund the $50 and keep this window for himself.

This window hung in our living room for most of my childhood. I obtained it from my Dad in 2013 and it has hung in our family living room since.

CODY TRANSOM: Our home in Overland Park Kansas (On Cody Street) had 2 big beautiful windows on each side of the fireplace in the living room. My idea was to make 2 of these windows but I never got past making 1 and it hung for 8 years before we moved. This window is framed using old shelves I made that had our kids pictures sitting on them. It now hangs in our living room in Westfield, Indiana.

GEOFF’S FIRST COMMISSION: In 2007 I had the desire to re-establish a stained glass studio in my basement in Overland Park Kansas. I had a colleague that had a lot of interest in the art form and was building his first home in Texas, which he thought a stained glass window would be perfect for. We designed the window together to fit a specific space in his home and I framed this in a salvaged architectural window.

THE RE-INSPIRED COLLECTION

After years of being away from the practice, this collection is called Re-Inspired in honor of my Dad, who taught me how to make Stained Glass Windows when I was 10 years old. Now that he’s gone, I’ve found stained glass is a way to for me to remain close to him, re-inspire my creativity and remind myself of the essential techniques and joy of making windows.

The Re-inspired Collection is a study in tools, supplies, techniques, glass styles, window styles, finding my way to create uniqueness in my design and simply a trial to figure out what people like, what I like and a starting point for every collection that follows.
